Meaning

Attenuate means to make something weaker, thinner, less intense, or less harmful. It is common in science, medicine, engineering, and formal writing: a wall can attenuate sound, and a vaccine may use an attenuated virus. Do not use it when you mean explain away blame; that is extenuate.
