アズ ウェル アズ (B1)
English: As well as
カタカナ: アズ ウェル アズ
IPA: /æz wɛl æz/
Definition
As well as has two meanings:
1. IN ADDITION TO: 'She speaks French as well as Spanish.' (= She speaks French and also Spanish)
2. EQUALLY WELL: 'He cooks as well as his mother.' (= His cooking is as good as his mother's)
Meaning 1 (addition) is much more common. The key grammar trap: when used as meaning 1, the verb agrees with the FIRST noun, not both:
'John, as well as Mary, IS coming.' (not: are coming)
意味: as well asには2つの意味があります:
1. 〜に加えて(最も一般的):She speaks French as well as Spanish.(フランス語だけでなくスペイン語も話します)
2. 〜と同様に上手く:He cooks as well as his mother.(彼は母親と同じくらい料理が上手い)
重要な文法の落とし穴:意味1で使う場合、動詞はas well asより前の(最初の)名詞に一致します:
John, as well as Mary, IS coming.( is、areではない)
