Definition
Ancient means extremely old, belonging to a very distant time in the past — typically thousands of years ago. It is used for civilizations, history, monuments, and languages: 'ancient Rome', 'ancient Egypt', 'the ancient Olympics'. In everyday informal English, 'ancient' is also used humorously to mean something that simply seems very old or outdated: 'My phone is ancient — it's three years old!' Japanese learners should be careful not to use 'ancient' for things that are merely 'old' (古い) — ancient implies a time scale of centuries or millennia, not just decades.
