English: Among
IPA: /əˈmʌŋ/
Definition
Among means in the middle of a group, or as part of a group of three or more things/people.
'She was among friends.' (surrounded by a group of friends)
'Among the top students, she stood out.' (within the group of top students)
The classic rule: use BETWEEN for two items, AMONG for three or more.
'Choose between A and B' (two options)
'Choose among A, B, C, and D' (four options)
However, 'between' is often used for three or more items too when they are distinct and individually defined — this is advanced usage.
She was among friends.(友人たちに囲まれていた)
Among the top students, she stood out.(上位の学生たちの中で、彼女は際立っていた)
Choose between A and B.(AとBのどちらかを選ぶ)
Choose among A, B, C, and D.(A、B、C、D
Examples / 例文
