Meaning

Allege means to state that something, usually wrongdoing, is true before it has been proved. It protects the speaker from presenting an unproven claim as fact.

Examples

• 検察は、その会社が安全記録を偽造したと主張しています。
  Prosecutors allege that the company falsified safety records.
• その報告書は、市長が贈り物を受け取ったと申し立てていますが、証拠は示していません。
  The report alleges that the mayor accepted gifts, but it gives no evidence.
