Definition
An adverb used in brackets after a word or phrase in a quotation to indicate that the word or phrase is written exactly as it was in the original source, including any errors or unusual spellings.
Examples
The letter stated, 'I will be there on Tuseday (sic), ready to sign the contract.'
He wrote, 'The report was very long and complicated, and frankly, not very good (sic).'
She quoted him as saying, 'I think we should go with the new plan, it's the bestest (sic) option we have.'
How to Use sic
- sic [word/phrase] (collocation)
- Indicating an error or unusual wording in a quotation. — "The article claimed, 'The president said he was 'very happy to be here today (sic)' during the controversial visit.'"
- sic on (phrasal verb)
- To incite or urge an animal or person to attack. — "The farmer decided to sic his dog on the fox that had been raiding the henhouse."
