Meaning

A digraph, a sequence of two letters representing a single sound, most commonly the long 'e' sound (/iː/) as in 'field' or 'piece'. It can also represent the long 'i' sound (/aɪ/) as in 'tie' or 'lie'.

Examples

  • The word 'believe' has the 'ie' digraph making an 'ee' sound.
  • She decided to 'tie' the ribbon in a bow.
