Behaving in a way that suggests one has higher standards or more noble beliefs than is the case.

Examples

  • It was hypocritical of him to criticize others for being late when he himself always arrived after the meeting started.
  • Her speech about environmental protection seemed hypocritical given her frequent use of a private jet.
