Meaning

A braking system consisting of a metal disc attached to a wheel hub that is slowed or stopped by friction pads squeezed against it by a caliper.

Examples

• Modern mountain bikes almost exclusively use a disc brake system for superior stopping power in wet conditions.
• The mechanic noticed the disc brake pads were worn down to the metal and needed an urgent replacement.
