Meaning

A fast, maneuverable warship designed to escort larger vessels in a fleet or battle group and defend them against stronger short-range attackers (originally torpedo boats, now also missiles and submarines).

Examples

  • The guided-missile destroyer sailed through the rough seas, maintaining its position in the naval formation.
  • During the exercise, the destroyer successfully intercepted multiple simulated enemy targets.
