The angular distance of a celestial body north or south of the celestial equator, or the angular difference between magnetic north and true north.

Examples

  • Astronomers use a star's declination along with its right ascension to pinpoint its exact location in the sky.
  • Navigators must account for magnetic declination to accurately plot their course using a compass.
