Definition
A position in chess where a player's king is under immediate attack (in 'check') and there is no way to remove it from attack on the next move, resulting in the end of the game.
Examples
The grandmaster forced a checkmate in just ten moves.

A well-played opening can often lead to a swift checkmate.
