baulk-line

Meaning

A straight line drawn across the baulk area of a billiard or snooker table, from which the cue ball must be struck when starting a frame or after a foul.

Examples

• The referee reminded the player that the cue ball must be placed behind the baulk-line.
• He failed to hit the object ball because his shot from the baulk-line lacked precision.
