Meaning

The breeding of a hybrid with one of its parents or an individual genetically similar to one of its parents to achieve offspring with a genetic identity closer to that parent.

Examples

  • The scientist performed a backcross to ensure the new wheat variety retained the disease resistance of the wild ancestor.
  • By using a backcross strategy, the researchers were able to eliminate the unwanted traits introduced during the initial hybridization.
