A type of rotorcraft that uses an unpowered, freely rotating rotor to provide lift, while a separate engine-driven propeller provides forward thrust.

Examples

  • The inventor spent years refining the design of his prototype autogyro.
  • Unlike a helicopter, an autogyro cannot hover in one spot because its rotor is not powered by the engine.
