A blockage of a blood vessel caused by one or more air bubbles entering the circulatory system.

Examples

• The surgeon took extreme care to purge the tubing of all bubbles to prevent a fatal air embolism during the procedure.
• An air embolism can occur if a large volume of air is accidentally introduced into a vein during an intravenous injection.
