Loss of the ability to recognize objects, persons, sounds, shapes, or smells, despite having intact sensory organs and memory.

Examples

• The patient's visual agnosia made it impossible for him to identify common household items by sight alone.
• Auditory agnosia can prevent someone from distinguishing between the sound of a ringing phone and a doorbell.
