A form of government where a single ruler, such as a monarch, has supreme and unlimited authority, not subject to any laws or checks.

Examples

  • The French Revolution was a violent overthrow of the absolute system that had ruled the country for centuries.
  • In an absolute system, the monarch's word is law, and there are no elections or parliaments to limit their power.
