The intrinsic brightness of a celestial object, calculated as the apparent magnitude it would have if it were located at a standard distance of 10 parsecs from Earth.

Examples

• Astronomers use absolute magnitude to compare the energy output of stars regardless of their actual distance from our solar system.
• A star with a very low absolute magnitude is actually much more luminous than one with a high value.
